If your coffee has started tasting flat or bitter, your gear may need cleaning. Coffee oils go stale and turn rancid, and hard-water minerals build up inside machines and kettles, slowing them down and shortening their lives.
A few inexpensive supplies keep everything running like new. Here's what we'd keep under the sink.
Our picks are based on research, not sponsorships. We compare manufacturer specifications, read long-term owner feedback, and weigh what experienced home baristas and coffee professionals consistently recommend. We favor gear that's easy to use, built to last and repairable. No brand pays to be included, and we update this guide as products change.
What to look for
Descaling vs. cleaning
Descaling removes mineral buildup from water. Cleaning removes coffee oils and old grounds. Most gear needs both, on different schedules.
Why not vinegar?
Vinegar works on mild scale but can leave a smell and taste, and some manufacturers advise against it. Purpose-made descalers rinse out cleanly.
Check your manual
Many espresso machines and smart brewers have a built-in descaling program. Follow it, and use a descaler the maker approves.
Frequently asked questions
How often should I descale my coffee maker?
Every one to three months, more often with hard water. Slower brewing or louder machines are a sign it's due.
How often should I clean my grinder?
Run grinder cleaning tablets through about once a month, and brush out the burrs every few months.
Do I need to backflush my espresso machine?
If it has a three-way valve, backflush with water every few days and with a cleaning tablet about once a week to once a month, depending on use.
